Will the studios release content?

via PHOSITA ::: an intellectual property weblawg:
The recent TiVo/ Netflix Partnership Presents Security and Licensing Issues

Studios will be reluctant to release content to be distributed through the Netflix/Tivo partnership, because of fears of piracy and loss of control of content. It's not the vehicle of distribution that's the trick; it's the value of the content. That's why you hear about movie libraries being bought and sold for billions of dollars.

"It seems that technology is not the hold-up in the TiVo/ Netflix partnership. The details regarding licensing agreements and anti-piracy security systems will be a hurdle that will take a lot of time to overcome."

  1. The movie studios are wrong about TIVO increasing piracy. I actually believe this will reduce piracy. Why would anybody take the time and trouble to deencrypt compress and burn a DVD with all the problems that go along with the process. Why would anybody make a DVD which has such problems as inferior quality of the burned DVD, deencryption problems, etc., when they can load 5 or more movies on the TIVO box and take that along with them and when the individual finishes a movie they delete it and load another movie. To make it even easier a small portable TIVO box could be developed which would would allow you to put a movie or two on it and be able to hook it up to a TV and watch the content of the portable device.
