Another Netflix Fan personal milestone

For the first time since I joined in January, 2004, I have fewer than 300 movies in my Netflix queue!! This is because I am trying not to add anything unless it's in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. I have already seen 547 movies in the book. Of the remaining titles, 299 are in my Netflix queue, and a few more are in my Greencine or Nicheflix queues. The rest are not on DVD. I'll have to hunt them down on VHS, either at Facets (by mail), or my local favorite, Video Review. There are still about 100 movies in the book which are not available on video.

  1. Yes, you need to have a special DVD player, but I found one at Walmart for $39. Using a site called videohelp.com on which a user posted a hack for my cheapo DVD player, I was able to convert it into a multi-region player. With this hack, my player also supports both NTSC and PAL formats.

Here is a list of titles I've rented from Nicheflix which are on the list of 1001. Some of these have since become available on Netflix. Their inventory is growing all the time:

    Samurai, The [Le Samourai] (1967)
    Week End (1967)
Salo, or The 120 days of Sodom [Salo o le centoventi giornate di sodoma] (1975)
Au Hasard Balthazar (1966) (Netflix has this one)
Eraserhead (1977) (also on Netflix now)
Shaolin Master Killer [Shao Lin san shi liu fang] (1978)
Voyage in Italy [Viaggio in Italia] (1953)
Une Partie de Campagne [A Day in the Country] (1936) (39 minutes)
Pierrot Le Fou (1965) (coming soon)
    The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)
    The Cloud-Capped Star (1960)
    Repulsion (1965) (Netflix)
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, The (1943)
    King Kong (1933)
Journal d'une Femme de Chambre, Le [The Diary of a Chambermaid] (1964) (Netflix)
Matter of Life and Death, A [Stairway to Heaven] (1946)
    Ox-Bow Incident, The (1943) (Netflix)
    Cat People (1942)
Büchse der Pandora, Die [Pandora's Box] (1929)
    Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
    Napoleon (1927)
Top Hat (1935) (coming soon to Netflix)

  2. My pleasure.

There are a few films in the 1001 that, because of their unique nature, may never be available on home video. I'm talking about stuff like Blonde Cobra or Flaming Creatures. Really weird experimental films.

  3. Yes, I plan to work on the New York Times list of the best 1000 20th century movies. I've seen about half of those.

I find that the more I watch of the good stuff, the less appetite I have for mindless fluff.
